You survived your childhood, but at times you wonder if you did. You often feel sad, anxious, stressed, and guilty or nothing at all. There is a distance that you keep between yourself and others. It feels safer that way, but also lonely. You may not feel “good enough”, or it’s hard for you to figure out how to move your life forward. You’ve been handling these feelings on your own. Now, it’s beginning to catch up with you. You’ve come to realize that it’s time to lean on someone other than yourself.

Trauma Therapy and PTSD Treatment in Westchester, NY CAN Help

If you have experienced a traumatic event it may be very difficult to take the first step to help yourself. But, it is important to realize that although it may take time, you can get better with trauma treatment. Some people are afraid they will have to re-live the past. Yet, that is not the case. Trauma treatment is more about learning to cope with the effects of trauma and build a more positive life. In healing trauma, I will encourage you to take your power back. This means acknowledging your strengths and reframing your experiences. Together, we will create new ways to live the way you want and deserve.

WHAT IS TRAUMA?

Trauma is the response to a very distressing or disturbing event that:

  • Overwhelms an individual's ability to cope

  • Impacts one’s sense of self and safety

  • Causes feelings of helplessness

  • Affects their ability to feel the full range of emotions and experiences

It often happens in situations where we cannot control the outcome when we think we can or should. It is not the event that determines whether something is traumatic to you. Instead, trauma is determined by your experience of the event and what it means to you.

Some Common Reactions to Trauma:

  • Nightmares and flashbacks as if you were currently reliving the trauma

  • Panic Attacks

  • Depression

  • Disconnected and isolated from others

  • Easily startled and hypervigilant

  • Avoidance of people, places, or things that could remind you of the trauma

  • Irritability and severe mood swings

  • Negative thoughts about yourself and others

  • Sleep-related problems

How Does Trauma Impact us and our Brains?

Traumatic experiences often have long-lasting effects on our lives. This could include emotional or relational trauma. This can cause us to feel stuck and unable to move forward. It can also block us from attaining our goals and keep us stuck in the past. Our brain works hard to protect us even in the face of traumas. So, when something negative happens to us, our brain tries to organize the event to understand it. But, sometimes these distressing memories get stuck in the wrong part of our brain. Trauma therapy, including EMDR, can help break up memories and shift them to where they belong.

Symptoms of PTSD

There are four types of PTSD symptoms:

  • Reliving the event (nightmares, flashbacks, or triggers)

  • Avoiding situations that remind you of the event

  • Negative changes in beliefs and feelings

  • Feeling keyed up (hyperarousal)

Symptoms may not be the same for everyone. PTSD symptoms usually start soon after the traumatic event. But, they may not appear until months or years later. They also may come and go over many years. If the symptoms last longer than four weeks, cause great distress, or interfere with your work or home life, you may have PTSD.

How do trauma Therapy and PTSD treatment help?

We all can recover and heal when something bad happens to us. But, it is very common for people to get stuck somewhere in their trauma recovery. As a result, it interferes with their ability to function in their daily life. My priority is to create a safe, supportive environment so you will feel comfortable in trauma therapy. You can expect to learn concrete skills. This includes grounding techniques to help you cope when feeling overwhelmed or dysregulated. I teach mindfulness exercises and resources to help acknowledge your inner strength and resiliency. You will also learn to navigate uncomfortable emotions without being overtaken by them.

It’s important to know you’re not alone if you’re struggling to cope and there are plenty of things you can do to help you move forward. My role is to provide the support you need to help you cope with these experiences and help guide you in living a better life. One way we may work through this is with Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy which works to heal wounds and rid emotional distress. We might also explore how your childhood or past shaped you today to help you to have a better understanding of yourself and your relationship patterns or issues around boundary setting.

I work with clients to provide actionable tools and a sense of peace and calm. We work together to develop and foster safe intimacy in relationships. Most important, we will work together on empowering you to move past the trauma and live life to the fullest.
